The Robert Burns Haldane Begg Collection was donated to Special Collections in 1963. New materials were donated in 2022.
The processing, arrangement, and description of the Robert Burns Haldane Begg Collection commenced and was completed in 1963. Additional descriptions were completed in May 2009, August 2022, and November 2022.
Robert Burns Haldane Begg (1880-1965) was born on January 4, 1880, to James Beveridge and Janet Haldane Begg. He was the youngest of three children. He graduated from VPI in 1899 with a degree in Civil Engineering. Some time after 1910, he married Adah M. (abt. 1886-1953). From 1913 to 1956, he taught Civil Engineering at VPI, while serving as Head of the Civil Engineering Department. He died in 1965.
The collection contains a VPI honor list for 1897-1898, a 1948 Chi Epsilon dinner program, a 1962 list of living alumni who
attended VAMC prior to 1900, and two artifacts. While Begg is not on the honor roll, future VPI president Julian A. Burress
is listed as a "proficient" senior and as graduating with a Bachelors of Science with honors. Chi Epsilon is the United States
