This collection was donated to the university in 1962, and the cadet coat was donated to the university in 1972.
The processing, arrangement, and description of the Greenwood H. Nowlin, Jr. Collection was completed in February 2011.
Greenwood Hopkins Nowlin, Jr. (1878-1975) of Campbell County, Virginia, attended Virginia Agriculture and Mechanical College (now Virginia Tech) from 1896 through 1899. Nowlin also played the mandolin and violin with a group of other young men that would perform at school dances for free.
Nowlin was the son of Greenwood Hopkins Nowlin, Sr., and Lelia Pendleton, and he married Buelah Hall Terrell. He worked as a metallurgist at U.S. Steel.

The collection contains photographs, stereo views, and papers created or collected by Greenwood H. Nowlin, Jr. The photos are of Nowlin, Professor Robert G. Price, Nowlin's room, and two of the band that Nowlin was a part of that played at the dances from 1896-1898. The stereo views are of the Grand Colonade, Italy, Milan's Cathedral, Italy, St. Peter's, Rome, a ceremony of Washing the Saints' Feet in Jerusalem, Roosevelt's "Rough Riders" on the Yucatan, and numerous battle ships, from 1896-1989. The leather bound pad of paper contains some numbers and the names of two women. The receipts are from transactions with the school or materials need while at school.

Nowlin's cadet coat was separated to the Textile Collection as Textile1993.002 .
