Biographical / Historical

A collection of photographs of "Old George" the carved wooden statue of George Washington atop the cupola on Washington and Lee Univerity's Washington Hall. The original statue was carved by cabinet maker Matthew Kahle of Lexington, Virginia in 1842 from a Tulip Poplar log. In 1990 "Old George" was removed and replaced by a cast duplicate. The restored original is now located in WLU's Special Collections and Archives Department in Leyburn Library. Former head of the university's Building and Grounds department, Pat Brady, took some of the photographs included.
