Biographical Note
Joseph Millard Butterworth was born to Cary Wilbur and Ida or Mamie (Little) Butterworth on August 29, 1893, in Doswell, Virginia. He studied mechanical engineering at Virginia Polytechnic Institute (VPI) from 1911 to 1915, while his brother Alvin S. Butterworth studies electrical engineering, also at VPI from 1911 to 1914. He also had a sister Agnes L. Butterworth.
Butterworth worked as an engineer, including time as a draughtsman for the Curtiss Aeroplane Co. of Buffalo, New York, in the 1910s and at the J.G. Wilson Corp. from the 1920s-1940s, as manager of the Baltimore, Maryland, office, an employee in Haverford, Pennsylvania, and assistant superintendent of the Norfolk, Virginia, office.
Butterworth married Virginia Louise Baughan (1897-1985) on June 5, 1918, in Baltimore, and they had two sons, Jospeh and Robert. He died on November 19, 1942, and is buried alongside his wife at Riverview Cemetery in Richmond.
