Biographical Note
Alfred Hughes was born in 1824 in Wheeling, Virginia. Hughes graduated the Homeopathic Medical College of Philadelphia in 1853 and began practicing in Wheeling. Hughes was a Confederate sympathizer, and during the Civil War he wrote multiple articles against the Lincoln administration. These articles had him labeled as a traitor and he spent about seven months at Camp Chase, a Union prison camp in Columbus, Ohio. Following the war, Hughes moved to Baltimore where he was a successful physician. Alfred Hughes passed away in 1880.

Scope and Content
This collection contains three letters sent to or from Alfred Hughes, a doctor and political prisoner in Ohio during the Civil War. This colleciton also contains the envelopes used to send these letters. In Hughes letter to his wife, he provides updates on his parole and expresses the importance of letters from loved ones. Also included in this collection is a pass issued by Ohio Governor, David Tod, that allowed Alfred Hughes to visit Camp Chase. This collection also includes three envelopes sent to Alfred Hughes.
