Biographical Note

Alfred S. Roe was born June 8th, 1844 in Wayne County, New York. Roe is the son of Austin Marinus Roe and Polly Catherine Seeyle. Roe served in the Civil War as a private in Company A, 9th New York Heavy Artillery. During his time in the army, Roe was captured and held as a prisoner of war in Danville, Virginia. Following the war, Roe moved to Middlesex County, Massachusetts, where he married Nora Ardelia Metcalf. Alfred and Nora had four children, thoigh two of their children passed away when they were young. Alfred Roe passed away on Hanuary 6th, 1917.

Scope and Content

This document contains a report filed by Alfred S. Roe that details his experience as a prisoner of war during the civil war. The first section of this report is a questionnaire that ask questions about Roe's general experience as a prisoner of war. The second section of this report is a letter addressed to Colonel A. J. H. Duganne, Historian of U. S. Prisoners of War. In this letter, Roe goes into more detail about the treatment and conditions that he and the other prisoners of war faced during their confinement.
