Biographical Note
Franklin L. Allen was born about 1821. Allen enlisted in the Union Army as a private on November 30th, 1863, and was mustered in Company C, 34th Ohio Infantry. On July 30th, 1964, Allen was trasferred to Company D, 36th Ohio Infantry. Allen was mustered out of the army on July 27th, 1865.

Scope and Content
This collection contains a letter from Franklin L. Allen to his sister, Sallie E. Allen. Franklin wrote the letter on July 8th, 1864, while at Camp Toland, West Virginia. The letter describes Allen's company's retreat from Lynchburg, and their return to Camp Toland. This collection also includes the envelope that was used to mail the letter.
