Biographical Note

Frederick William Nicholls Crouch was born in Engand on July 30, 1808. Crouch moved to the United States in 1849 and shortly after moved his family to California during the gold rush. While in California, Crouch's wife became sick and the family had to return to the east coast where they settled in Virginia. Crouch was a composer, best known for writing the music for "Kathleen Mavourneen" (1837). After settling in Virginia, Cruch became a professor of music. When the American Civil War started, Crouch enlisted in the Confederate Army and served for the entire duration of the war. Following the war, Crouch and his family moved around while Crouch was trying to make a living teaching music. Crouch passed away on August 18, 1896.
