Claibourne Walton Beattie, Sr. (1896-1971), graduated from the university with the class of 1919. His son Claibourne Walton Beattie, Jr. (1923-1978), was a student at Virginia Tech who graduated with the class of 1951 and later joined the U. S. Navy. Both are buried in Westwood Memorial Gardens, Chilhowie, Smyth County, Virginia.
This collection contains Virginia Polytechnic Institute memorabilia from alumni Claibourne Walton Beattie, Sr., and his son Claibourne Walton Beattie, Jr. The collection contains a 1924 graduation invitation and a 1951 commencent program. The collection also includes several programs and bulletins related to events on campus. There are several pieces of a cadet uniform, such as a hat, rat belt, and cords. Attached inside the hat is an event calender for The Lyric Theatre for September 1941. A copy of the Report of the Commissioner of Agriculture for the Year 1875 has a section about VPI.
