The U. S. Army Air Corps was originally created in 1907 as the U. S. Army Signal Corps Aeronautical Division. In 1914 it was
renamed the Aviation Section of the Army Signal Corps. In 1918 it became the Army Air Service. It officially became a combat
arm of the U. S. Army in 1920 and was again renamed in 1926, becoming the Army Air Corps. At the beginning of World War II,
it was reorganized as the Army Air Forces and finally became the U. S. Air Force in 1947.
