Henry A. Van Pelt enlisted with the 83rd Regiment, New York Infantry (aka 9th Regiment, New York State Militia) in 1861 as a private. By late 1863, he was a captain in Company H. Van Pelt was discharged in April 1864.

The collection includes a letter by Henry Van Pelt to "Frank," dated November 15, 1862, as well as an undated CDV of Van Pelt taken during the Civil War. In his letter, written from Rappahannock Station, Virginia, Van Pelt writes about camp life and activities of the regiments. The CDV is stamped by Halleit & Brother, N.Y.
