Hiram P. Teed was born about 1834 in New York and married Elizabeth Wakeman (b. abt. 1831). He enlisted with the 144th Regiment, New York Infantry during the Civil War and fought in several battles including Fort Wagner and Honey Hill. After the war, Teed returned to New York. In 1876 he and his wife had a daughter, Isa (Isabelle?). By 1880, they had moved to Pennsylvania and Teed worked as a sewing machine dealer.
The collection consists of six letters from Pvt. Hiram P. Teed, Co. A, 144th New York Volunteers, and one letter from his wife, Elizabeth. The letters (1862-1863) detail camp movement and business, home affairs, and Teed's romantic frustrations at the separation from his wife.
The collection is arranged chronologically. The two letters that are undated appear at the front of the collection.
