The Daisy Starbird Manuscript Cookbook was purchased by Special Collections and University Archives in 2010.
The processing, arrangement, and description of the Daisy Starbird Manuscript Cookbook was completed in January 2011.
The cookbook is signed by Daisy B. Starbird (b. 1882?) of Brunswick, Maine. While little more is known about the owner/creator of the cookbook, it is possible that she may have been a teacher (pupils age 5-14), which may explain the attendance records intermingling with the recipes.
The collection contains a manuscript cookbook containing recipes, home remedies, and crochet instructions written in several different hands. A majority of the recipes are for desserts (for example, "Pork Cake," "Golf Balls," and "Hop Toads"), but there are also some for soups, puddings, and sauces. Like many recipe books, there are notes for home remedies.
There are several different hands, one of whom may be Mrs. Hanson, to whom several of the receipts are attributed. Other contributors include Mrs. M. Shaw, Mrs. Rogers, Nellie Darrah, and Miss Lancaster. The signature on the inside cover reads "Daisy B. Starbird, Feb. 5, 1903, in Brunswick, Maine."
In addition, several pages in the book contain attendance sheets, most likely for a school or class.
