Ballard and Ballard Company, also known as Ballard's Obelisk Flour and Ballard Mills, was founded by Samuel Thruston Ballard and Charles T. Ballard in Louisville, Kentucky in 1880. Ballard and Ballard was purchased by the Pillsbury Company in 1951.
The collection includes a string of cardboard cut-out advertisements, a mirror with an advertisement, and a booklet titled, "It's Ballard that's Enough."
The cardboard advertisements consist of five panels, attached to a hanging string. The exterior panels imitate small cloth flour bags imprinted with the company seal and promote Ballard's flour with the phrases, "Bread Is the Staff Of Life Therefore Have it Good" and "Ballard's Obelisk Flour Always Reliable." The second and fourth panels feature a colorful cherry pie and the phrase, "Use Ballard's Obelisk Flour." The center panel is double the size of the end panels and features the company seal and a chocolate cake on a reproduced cloth flour bag. The front of the panels are done in recto color by the American Lithography Company of New York, and the back of the panels are printed in black and white and present the phrases, "Use Ballard's Obelisk Flour", "Ballard's Obelisk Flour", "Ballard's Obelisk the Kind of Flour that Encourages Home Baking", and "A Valuable Premium Ticket in Every Sack of Ballard's Obelisk Flour."
The booklet contains recipes and cooking tips from the Presidents and Directors of the General Federation of Women's Clubs of all fifty states and the District of Columbia. The booklet includes chapters on The Housewife Problem; Breads and Biscuits; Sensible Salads and Desserts; Thrift Suggestions; Cakes and Cookies; Pies, Puddings, and Pastries; Selection and Cooking of Meats; Meats; Economical Uses of Fats; Thrifty Meatless Recipes; Table Laid for Formal Dinner; Home Canning; Canning of Fruit; Time Table for Canning Vegetables; Vegetables and Fruit Drying; and Miscellaneous Tables.
In addition, it has a small pocket mirror with an advertisement for the company on the back.
