The Byllesby Dam, Carroll County, Virginia, Photographs were purchased by Special Collections in 2009.
The processing, arrangement, and description of the Byllesby Dam, Carroll County, Virginia, Photographs commenced and was completed in June 2009.
The construction and naming of the Byllesby Dam was completed between 1912 and 1913. The dam is named after H.M. Byllesby and Company–a Chicago-based investment firm that assisted in the creation of the Appalachian Power Company. The dam has a surface area of 242 acres and is a source of hydroelectric power for the surrounding area. During the construction of the Byllesby Dam, the Appalachian Power Company also built another dam at Buck–three miles downstream from the Byllesby Dam.
This scrapbook page contains five photographs taken in and around the Byllesby Dam in Carroll County, Virginia. While the photographs on the scrapbook page are not labeled, one photograph is of the dam. Another photograph shows two women standing on the dam. The third photograph on this particular page shows a small building marked "Byllesby" directly beside a set of railroad tracks. On the opposite side of this scrapbook page are two photographs of children–one standing in front of a car with a license plate from Wytheville and the other standing in front of what appears to be a temporary campground with tents and a cot.
