James Preston Newman was a student at VPI in the 1930s. He received his B.A. in 1935 and later received his M.S. in 1937. He taught English at VPI from 1935 to 1979.
The J. Preston Newman Papers includes four poems (1935-1938, n.d.). The collection also contains papers relating to Ralph Minthorne Brown, university librarian at Virginia Tech, including four publications by Brown autographed to Newman; a letter (1975) to Newman from P. H. McGauley (Virginia Tech faculty, 1927-1928, 1950-1951) giving a profile of Brown; three radio talks by Brown on "The Joy of Walking," "Prairies," and "Sunrises," and a booklet of verses by Brown.
