The bulk of the materials in the William Stoney Papers represent his work as an active composer. The materials include working sketches and sketchbooks and original compositions in various points of the publishing process. William Stoney was a performer as well as a composer. Because church music played an important role in his early music career, there are materials appropriate for church services. This series includes music that he used for his performances and as inspiration for his compositions. Materials are all written by other composers. There are no original compositions located in this series.

This series contains information relating to William Stoney's personal interests including information about the Tidewater Composers Guild, a personal journal, and a thesis written by Cathie Gaherty about his life and work. There are also materials concerning publicity and reviews throughout the later part of Stoney's career.

William Stoney spent much of his career teaching music theory, piano, composition, and various performing groups. Stoney kept several notebooks with sketches and possible motives for later development. He also kept extensive notes about pieces upon which he was working. This series contains working drafts, sketches, and sketchbooks for his original compositions.

Scope and Contents

Throughout his career William Stoney composed several pieces both for choral and instrumental groups. Materials in this series have been divided to delineate these differences and then been arranged alphabetically. Instrumental works have been divided into sonatas listed by instrument and all other pieces.
