In order to streamline the process of applying collection numbers, Special Collections staff completed a large-scale renumbering campaign in 2017-2018. This collection was previously cataloged as SC 4041 .
This Plains District, Rockingham County School Register contains both daily and term records of attendance listing pupils by name, sex, age, and pursued subject studies with lists of textbooks and authors in addition to a brief visitors' log for Plains District School(s): Whitmer School No. 28 November 1, 1886-March 24, 1887; The Brake's School No. 40 November 28, 1887-March 5, 1888; and White School No. 40 October 22, 1888-November 17, 1893. Numbers of textbooks by title and author available for student use as well as information on school property including style of construction, heating and ventilation, acreage and furnishings are provided sporadically throughout the term report section. The visitors' section indicates whether the County Superintendent or District Trustees paid visits during school sessions. Three blank, loose-leaf monthly report forms are included in the back of the register. The Virginia Public School Register was published in Richmond, Virginia by J.W. Randolph & English. Entries appear to be recorded by the various instructors at the school(s.)
