Lord Fairfax Community College (LFCC) herbarium was founded in 1974 by Professor Robert Simpson at the Middletown, Virginia campus of Lord Fairfax Community College and grew most rapidly during the Atlas of the Virginia Flora collection campaigns of the the 1970s and 1980s. In March 2019, the herbarium was transferred from LFCC to the herbarium of George Mason University following the retirement of Professor Simpson. Lord Fairfax Community College is now Laurel Ridge Community College.
Dr. Andrea Weeks of George Mason University was a 2020-2021 Fenwick Fellow. Dr. Weeks' created a digital resource site of the LFCC herbarium as her fellowship project, and subsequently donated the notebooks to the Special Collections Research Center.
16 notebooks rehoused in archival binders containing over 4000 pages of notes about the Lord Fairfax Community College Herbarium specimen collection, collected from the 1970s - 2000s. The herbarium specimens mostly consist of vascular plants from the Blue Ridge physiographic province of northwest Virginia. The notebooks contain more detailed locality and habitat descriptions than reported by the labels of the herbarium specimens.

The Special Collections Research Center also holds the Kjell Sandved nature photograph collection, the Carol D. Litchfield microbiology collection, and other biology-focused collections.
