In 1986 the Secretary of Commerce and Resources was dissolved and split into two separate offices, the Secretary of Economic Development and the Secretary of Natural Resources. In 1994 the name of the office of the Secretary of Economic Development was changed to the Secretary of Commerce and Trade. The Secretary of Economic Development was responsible for assisting the Governor in implementing policies for promoting economic development, providing managerial guidance and direction to economic development agencies, and developing and promoting economic development programs and budgets.
