Henry County was formed in 1776 from Pittsylvania County.
Henry County (Va.) Public Buildings and Grounds, 1780-1936. Barcode number 1154887 consist of three folders containing various orders, bonds, contracts, vouchers, and reports concerning public buildings such as the courthouse, jail, public schools, and clerk's office. Jail Inspectors reports for the time period circa 1834-1895 are included. Also noted are orders for constructing stocks and a pillory (1807), removal of the old jail (1836), selling items from the Odd Fellows Hall (1859), and enclosing the courthouse grounds (1897).
Barcode number 1147157 consists of one folder (Accession 28289) containing photocopies of original documents related to the construction of two courthouse buildings and a jail. Included are at bond for the construction of a courthouse (1780); a bond, dimensions, and a interior drawing for a courthouse (1793); an order including dimensions for repairs to the courthouse (undated), and an order recording the specifications of a jail to be constructed for the county (1803).
