These items came to the Library of Virginia in a transfer of court records from Prince Edward County.

Historical Information

Prince Edward County was named in honor of Edward Augustus, a son of Prince Frederick Louis, a grandson of King George II, and a younger brother of King George III. The county was formed from Amelia County in 1753. The county court first met on 8 January 1754. The county seat is Farmville.

Scope and Content

Prince Edward County (Va.) Apprenticeship Indentures, 1759-1875, are bonds and contracts of apprenticeship, showing the names of master and apprentice, the trade to be taught, details of the contract, the amount of the bond and the names of sureties. The collection includes apprentice indentures of free African Americans.
