Acquisition Information

These records came to the Library of Virginia in a transfer of court records from Giles County.

Historical Information

Giles County was named for William Branch Giles, a US Senator, Representative and Governor of Virginia. The county was formed in 1806 from Montgomery, Monroe (now in West Virginia) and Tazewell counties. Additional land was added from Wythe County (1808), Tazewell County (1826 and 1836), Monroe County (now in West Virginia) (1829) and Mercer County (now in West Virginia) (1841).

Scope and Content

Giles County (Va.) Records, 1806-1932, consist of the following series: Court Records (subfield series include Judgments, Clerk's Records: Correspondence and Criminal Records: Commonwealth Causes), Tax and Fiscal Records, County Administrative Records (subfield series include Overseers of the Poor Records), Land Records, Election Reoords, Road and Bridge Records and Fiduciary Records. Chancery Records have been pulled.
