Biographical Information

An act to ascertain the losses and injuries sustained from the depradations of the enemy withing this commonwealth was passed by the General Assembly in May 1782 (chap. 10). The act required counties to hold special courts or to appoint members of the court to collect information and proof of the various losses and injuries sustained during the Revolutionary War. The proceedings or reports and the supporing documentation were to be submitted to the governor and council, to be laid before the next general assembly.

Scope and Content

These records include reports and accounts in response to an "act of the General Assembly to ascertain the losses and injuries sustained from the depradations of the enemy of the Commonwealth." Summary reports include name, type of loss, and amount of loss, and a cumulative amount of losses for the locality. Supporting documentation includes accounts, affidavits, depositions, itemized lists and vouchers for individual losses. Losses may include slaves, livestock, tobacco, food, household items, boats, and the destruction of houses and other structures.
