Historical Information

The act which established the previous Land Office passed the General Assembly on 22 June 1779. The register was the head of the Office and was appointed by joint ballot of both houses of the legislature.

Scope and Content

Warrants from the register of the Land Office issued after notification by the auditor that the set fee had been paid into the treasury. They authorized any county surveyor to survey for the individual named the number of acres specified. The approximately 130 warrants were issued between 1788 and 1917, with numbers ranging from No. 58 to No. 32169.

A warrant usually was filed with the final survey to which it applied. It is possible either that the warrants in this series were returned later than the surveys and never interfiled or that they were returned to be exchanged because of an error. Many include handwritten notes and annotations on the back, some of which involved the original holders of the warrants reassigning them.
