Historical Information
The act which established the previous Land Office next hit passed the General Assembly on 22 June 1779. The register was the head of the Office and was appointed by joint ballot of both houses of the legislature.
Scope and Content
These records contain a register compiled from vouchers on file in the Land Office. The cover includes a memorandum from register William G. Pendleton, dated 12 June 1815, noting that the register was compiled from vouchers found in the office and that no manuscripts other than the vouchers were located and no register found when he assumed the office.
The register lists the number of the exchange warrant, while the columns headed "to whom issued," "date," and "quantity" are blank. The final column contains the numbers of the original warrants, the quanitity of land, the date issued, and the name and military service details of the original recipients. These original warrants were issued between 1782 and 1783, and exchanged sometime before 1815.
The entries for numbers 30-34, 530, and 6795-6799 were added later; unlike entries #1-29, these entries include information in the first three columns. These warrants were issued after 1818 and exchanged 1820-1831.
