These items came to the Library of Virgina in transfers of court papers from Patrick County under the accession number 50251.

Historical Information

Patrick County, like Henry County, was named for Patrick Henry, who was the first governor of the commonwealth of Virginia. It was formed from Henry County by a statute adopted on 26 November 1790. The county court first met on 13 June 1791. Part of Henry County was added to Patrick in 1791. The county seat is Stuart.

Free negroes who were delinquent on their taxes were subject to being indentured by the county court to earn the money to pay the levy.

Patrick County (Va.) Lists of Free Negroes, 1856-1860, undated, consist of lists of insolvent free negroes compiled for the commissioner of the revenue. Lists typically record name, gender, age, occupation, and district where individual resided.
