Access Restrictions

Privacy protected and other protected information is considered confidential and is restricted from public access for 75 years. These files are open for access, but files may contain confidential education records or other protected information that must be restricted (see Code of Virginia 2.2-3705.4 and 2.2-3801). It will be necessary for an archivist to review unprocessed material for confidential education or other information for removal or redaction before files can be used by patrons for research purposes or before any copies of records can be made for patrons.

This collection has been processed using minimal processing standards: the original arrangement has been maintained, the container list is brief and simple, and the records have not been refoldered and fasteners have not been removed.

Scope and Content

Records, 1961-2012, consisting of the correspondence and subject files of the Chancellor of the Virginia Community College System. These records document academic, personnel, fiscal and administrative activities, as well as policies and procedures. Includes correspondence with community colleges and their presidents, as well as state and federal agencies; topical files; and committee meeting records and minutes. The collection is arranged into ten series organized by accession number.

Committees of note include the American Council on Education (ACE), Council on Post Secondary Accreditation (COPA), Presidents Advisory Council (ACOP), Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS), Southern Regional Education Board (SREB), and State Council of Higher Education of Virginia (SCHEV).

Virginia Community College campuses include: Blue Ridge, Central Virginia, Dabney S. Lancaster, Danville, Eastern Shore, Germanna, J. Sargeant Reynolds, John Tyler, Lord Fairfax, Mountain Empire, New River, Northern Virginia, Patrick Henry, Paul D. Camp, Piedmont Virginia, Rappahannock, Southside Virginia, Southwest Virginia, Thomas Nelson, Tidewater, Virginia Highlands, Virginia Western, and Wytheville.
