The collection is divided into subject files and correspondence and source files.

The correspondence and source files include abstracts and copies of information from census records, deeds, land grants and patents, marriage records, military records, parish registers, tax lists, and wills. There is also correspondence from other Elmore family members and researchers, including many letters from Myrtle B. Elmore (1918-1999), Lloyd DeWitt Bockstruck (b. 1945), and Paula Underwood Spencer (1932-2000). Each file is consecutively numbered from 1 to 1651. The files were used to compile the chronologies and timelines and numerous "working papers" found in the subject files, as well as "The Trunk of an Elmore Family Tree" in 1992. The files numbers are also noted in the lists of correspondents found in the subject files.
