Loaned for duplication by Kathleen Kirk, 8 August 2012 and 8 November 2012 (50542); 5 June 2013 (50929); and 6 February 2014 (51190).

Scope and Content

Collection, ca. 1722-2013, of material gathered by Kathleen Kirk of Suffolk, Virginia, into scrapbooks documenting various lines of her family history, including photographs, newspaper clippings, correspondence, and ephemera. Some of the individuals traced include: David Robertson (1785-1856), Elizabeth Steele Thompson Robertson(1799-1888), John Todd Anderson Martin (1812-1859), Elizabeth Bruce Roberston Martin Davidson (1836-1915), Jesse Thornhill Davidson, Chassie Belle Martin Abbitt Thomas, Charles Arthur Plunkett Abbitt, Cornelius Thomas, Elias Kirk, Rachel Paul Kirk, John Jacob Kirk, Margaretta S. Godwin Kirk, William Gill, Frances Rowlett Eanes Gill, Robert Sidney Gill, Aphia Jane Clements Gill, Robert Henry Gill, Margrette Adams Goodson Gill, Thomas Goodson, Martha Persons Goodson, James Wheadon, Sarah Cocke Graves Wheadon, John Russell Kirk, Arthur "Merle" Abbitt Kirk, J. Stokes Kirk, and Margaret Gill Kirk. Most of the families represented lived in the Hampton Roads area of Virginia, including Suffolk, Newport News, Portsmouth, and Norfolk. Also included is a time book, 1889-1890, for Thomas Shipyard, Portsmouth, Virginia.

The original material is organized into scrapbook volumes with titles assigned by the donor. The volumes were filmed in several batches (as reflected by the three accession numbers), in the order they were received. Some volumes containing mostly photographs were not filmed.
