This item came to the Library of Virginia in a shipment of court papers from Bland County under the accession number 50961.

Historical Information

Bland County is said to have been named for Richard Bland, a leader of colonial Virginia's resistance to Great Britain in the 1760s and 1770s. It was formed from Giles, Wythe, and Tazewell Counties in 1861, and another part of Giles was added in 1900. The county seat is Bland.

The Board of Supervisors has been the chief administrative body of the county since its establishment in 1869. Board members were originally elected by township voters; since abolition of the township system they have been elected from districts. The board's duties are fixed by statute and are primarily concerned with maintenance and construction of county buildings and fiscal matters.
