Historical Information
Amherst County was named for Major Jeffery Amherst, British commander in North America during the French and Indian War and governor of Virginia from 1759 to 1768. It was formed from Albemarle County in 1761.
Scope and Content
Amherst County (Va.) Public Buildings and Grounds, 1831-1833. This material consists of a floor plan and elevation for the improvement and expansion of the court clerk's office in Amherst Courthouse. The drawing depicts a two-story brick structure five bays wide. The commissioners' report includes specifications for the improvements.
