Southampton County was formed in 1749 from Isle of Wight County. Part of Nansemond County was added in 1785.

Scope and Content

Southampton County (Va.) Public Buildings and Grounds, 1833-1834. This series consists of orders, specifications, a bond, a report, and architectural floor plans for a two-story brick courthouse. The bond binds the craftsmen, Clements Rochelle and Jeremiah Cobb, to the governor for their construction services. The specifications spell out the dimensions, materials, and appointments of the new structure. The report is an account of the committee assigned to inspect the new structure for contractual compliance. The first and second floor plans indicate room layout, dimensions, and some court furniture.
