Historical Information

Cumberland County was formed from Goochland County in 1749.

Scope and Content

Cumberland County (Va.) Public Buildings and Grounds, 1834, 1874. This material consists of records related to the planning, design, construction, maintenance, and disposal of buildings on or near the public square in Cumberland County. Barcode number #1156172 contains three folders documenting repairs, construction, land acquisition, building removal, upkeep and maintenance, and contracts, 1751-1874, related to the courthouse, public square, jail, and clerk's office. Also included is a Cumberland County Superior Court of Law case styled Benjamin Cosby v. Cumberland County Justices, 1833, concerning payment for Cosby's work on the county jail.

Barcode number 1156186 consists of specifications and a small elevation and floor plan drawing for a building to house the County Court Clerk's office, 1834. The specifications are signed by J. W. Wilson, John Daniel, and Joseph Fuqua. Also included is an 1874 document consisting of two sheets of specifications. One of the sheets shows a floor plan for the arrangement of the courtroom giving the location of the bench, bar, stoves, windows, doors, chairs, etc. These sheets are signed by William J. Davis, B. B. Woodson, and William Fuqua. Both drawings relate to documents referenced above.
