Richmond, located between Henrico and Chesterfield Counties, was named by William Byrd II, who envisioned the development
of a city at the falls of the James River and with the help of William Mayo laid out the town in 1737. It was incorporated
as a town in 1782 and as a city in 1842.
Richmond (Va.) Tax Receipt, 1857, written by Eus. Robinson, clerk of the Circuit Court of the city of Richmond, represents
the taxes paid upon suits brought by Lee and Bayly between 31 August 1856 and 1 September 1857.
