Historical Information

Highland County was so named because of its mountainous terrain, and it is sometimes called the Little Switzerland of America. It was formed from Pendleton (now in West Virginia) and Bath Counties in 1847.

Modern Woodmen of America was founded in 1883 by Joseph Cullen Root, an Iowa businessman, to provide financial services, life insurance, and opportunities for fellowship for men ages 18 to 45. The Monterey Camp was organized 1910 May 4.

Scope and Content

Modern Woodmen of the World (Monterey Camp No. 14913) Records, 1910-1911, are comprised of a minute book, 1910-1911, and a pass report book, 1910-1912.

The minute book, 1910-1911, documents the election of officers and attendance at monthly meetings from May 1910 to May 1911. Income and expenses were recorded in the back of the book on pages 109-116. No index

The pass report book, 1910-1912, is a book of forms issued by the Modern Woodmen of America for recording dues collected and benefits paid to members each month. In the front of the book, there is a page of instructions to camp clerks outlining the recommended financial policies for each camp. No index.
