Acquisition Information

These items are photocopies of original documents found in Surry County Courthouse.

Historical Information

Surry County was named for the county of Surrey in England, and was formed for James City County about 1652.

Surry was created in 1652. Deed Book 10 (1835-1838) is missing and order books for 1718-1741 and various other early volumes are fragmentary. Most loose records prior to 1806 are missing. Courthouse fires in 1906 and 1922, however, did not result in loss of records, which were then housed in a separate clerk’s office.

Scope and Content

Wills, 1760-1913 of Surry County Court. Wills records the deceased's plan for how his or her estate was to be divided among his or her heirs following his or her death. Information commonly recorded in wills include the name of the deceased, also referred to as the testator; names of heirs; a listing of real and personal property (including slaves) and how it was to be divided among the heirs; names of individuals who were to be the will's executors; the date will was written; and the date will was recorded at the court house.

This collection contains photocopies of Surry County. Also included are photocopies of unrecorded wills in Surry County dated 1812 through 1911.
