Box 1156708 contains items that were created by the Virginia State Library's (now the Library of Virginia) Archives staff under accession numbers 20214a, 20214b and 21039.

Additional items came to the Library of Virginia in a transfer of court records from Essex County.

Historical Information

Essex County was formed from old Rappahannock County in 1692. The county was probably named for the English county or perhaps for Algernon Capell, second earl of Essex.

Scope and Content

Essex County (Va.) Tax and Fiscal Records, 1714-1965 (bulk 1733-1914), include a variety of records such as original Quitrent lists, 1715, pages 1 and 3 (with negative photostats found under accession number 21039.) A negative photostat of page 2 is found under accession number 20214a; negative photostats of Arrears of Quitrents , 1714, pages 2 and 3 are found under accession number 20214b and a negative photostat of Arrears of Quitrents, 1714, page 1 is found under accession number 21039; Delinquent Land Records (which deal with the sale and purchase, 1898-1899; payment of taxes, 1909-1913; recapitulation, 1909, 1912-1913 and lands not sold but escheated, 1912-1913) and Lists of Persons Paying Poll Tax (a container which houses 24 booklets.)
