Historical Information
Loudoun County was named for John Campbell, fourth earl of Loudoun, who was commander of British forces in North America during the early portion of the French and Indian War and governor of Virginia from 1756 to 1759. It was formed from Fairfax County in 1757.
Scope and Content
Loudoun County (Va.) Tax and Fiscal Records are composed of Poll Tax Lists (1937-1947, 1962, 1964-1965) and Reports on Audit for the town of Hamilton (1964-1965, 1974), the town of Leesburg (1957-1959) and the town of Purcellville (1961-1970). The poll tax lists record by district the names of persons who have paid all state poll taxes for a particular year. These lists were required to be submitted to the circuit courts and the Auditor of Public Accounts. The reports on audit are reports compiled by outside auditors on finances of the towns.
