Acquisition Information

These items came to the Library of Virginia in a shipment of court papers from Alleghany County. Portions of the collection were transferred under the following accession numbers: 36874, 36748, 36755, 36880, 36756, 36751, and 36752.

Historical Information

Alleghany County was named for the Allegheny Mountains, although it has a variant spelling. It was formed from Bath, Botetourt, and Monroe (West Virginia) Counties in 1822, and additional parts of Bath (1823) and Monroe (1843) were added. It area is 444 square miles, and the county seat is Covington. The former independent city of Clifton Forge reverted to the county in 2001.

The records in this collection were created by the County Court, Circuit Superior Court of Law and Chancery, and Circuit Court.
