Historical Information

The Albemarle Swamp Land Company was a land and lumber company involved in the selling and transporting of lumber and the draining and improvement of swamp lands. The company operated out of Suffolk, Virginia, but also had holdings in Pantego, a small town located in Beaufort County, North Carolina. Nathaniel Riddick operated as president, general agent, and treasurer for the company.

The account book was used as an exhibit in the chancery suit Nathaniel Riddick versus Albemarle Swamp Land Co. heard in the Nansemond County Circuit Court.

Scope and Content

Nathaniel Riddick and Albemarle Swamp Land Company Account Book, 1871-1875, documents Nathaniel Riddick's activities while serving as president and general agent for the company. Riddick recorded the wages owed employees listing their names and amounts owed for their work. Riddick also recorded purchases he made from the company store. Items purchased included clothing, fabric, and shoes. The back of the account book lists an account of sales at auction of stock belonging to the Albemarle Swamp Land Company in Pantego, N.C. This account lists the name of buyer and amount paid, but not the items purchased.
