Boxes 1042680-1042689 came to the Virginia State Library (now the Library of Virginia) under accession number 21817.
Items in folders marked 1721-1722 and 1721, 1752 in Box 1137633 came to the Virginia State Library (now the Library of Virginia) under accession number 29400. Items cover October 1721 county court session.
The volumes came to the Library of Virginia in a transfer of court records from Essex County.
Historical Information
Essex County was formed from old Rappahannock County in 1692. The county was probably named for the English county or perhaps for Algernon Capell, second earl of Essex.
These items were originally created by the County Court.
Scope and Content
Essex County (Va.) County Court Records, 1683-1912, found at the Library of Virginia include 8 boxes of unprocessed Executions, a box of unprocessed suit papers, 6 boxes of processed Judgments and 1 box of unprocessed Judgments.
Essex County (Va.) County Court Records, 1695-1874,undated, found at the State Records Center include 3 Order Books (one of which is a transcript), 1 Order Book which also contains a List of Acting Magistrates, Judgment Rule Books, Vols. 3-5, 1 Rule Book, 1 Chancery Reference Book, 1 undated Index to Execution Books and Execution Books, Vols 1-9.
