Historical Information

Spotsylvania County was formed from Essex, King William, and King and Queen Counties by a statute adopted in 1720 to take effect on 1 May 1721. The county was named for Alexander Spotswood, lieutenant governor of Virginia from 1710 to 1722.

Scope and Content

Spotsylvania County (Va.) Election Records consist of election tickets from 1900-1906 and poll books from 1902-1903.

Polls are lists of person who voted in each election in each precinct; they may be recorded on a single sheet of paper or in poll books, which is the modern practice. Polls are also heads of household, usually free white males, responsible for payment of taxes, or eligible to vote.
