This item came to the Library of Virginia in shipments of court papers from the City of Craig County under accession number 44924.

Historical Information

Andrew McCartney was whiskey dealer or saloon owner who operated in Craig County, Va., during the late 19th century.

The volumes were used as exhibits in the chancery case Admr. of Andrew McCartney vs. F. B. McCartney and others heard in the Circuit Court of Craig County.

Scope and Content

Andrew McCartney Distillery Account Books, 1877-1895, records transactions related to McCartney's liquor business. The volumes also included loose ephemera records including a letter that deals with his objections to laws that forbade selling under certain amounts of liquor near factories.
