Historical Information

Sussex County was named for the English county, and was formed from Surry County by a statute adopted in 1753. The county court first met on 30 May 1754. The county seat is Sussex.

Scope and Content

Sussex County (Va.) Tax and Fiscal Records, 1777-1911, consist of Circuit Court Tax Book, County Court Tax Book, Insolvent Personal Property and Capitation Taxes, Land Tax Books, Personal Property Tax Books, Personal Property Tax Interrogatories, Stony Creek Tax Day Book (also includes Wakefield district and account of R. A. Brown), Sussex County Warrants, Tithables, and Wakefield Tax Day Book.
