These items came to the Library of Virginia in a shipment of court papers from Grayson County.

Historical Information

Grayson County was named for William Grayson, a delegate to the Continental Congress from 1784 to 1787 and one of the first two United States senators from Virginia. It was formed from Wythe County in 1792, and a part of Patrick County was added in 1810.

Scope and Content

Grayson County (Va.) Tax and Fiscal Records, Loose Papers, 1830 circa-1937 (bulk 1858-1937) contains a Land Tax Book from the eighteen thirties and one from 1841.

Land Tax 1937: Distribution of Values and County and District Levies in Incorporated Towns for the County. Oath and certificates on County Property Book; two pages of Distribution of Values and County and District Levies not in Incorporated Towns and the General Recapitulation of Values of tracts of land and lots not in incorporated towns.

There are loose pages from the Delinquent Land Tax Book for 1886. There is one page of Delinquent Land Taxes for Wilson District. There are pages 1-2 of statistic pages for lots, and pages 1-22 for the tracts.

There are loose pages from Personal Property Books: Personal Property Taxes 1858: Eastern District, pages 16-21 and 26-29. Personal Property Taxes 1861: Eastern District No. 2, pages 26-31 and the Oath and Certificates page. Personal Property Taxes 1869: District 2, pages 32-35.
