Acquisition Information

These items came to the Library of Virginia in a shipment of court papers from Buchanan County.

Historical Information

Buchanan County was named for the United States president James Buchanan and was formed from Tazewell and Russell Counties in 1858.

Estrays were stray livestock found wandering. An inquest was held to determine the value of the livestock in order to reimburse the person who had found and cared for the animal. The report generally includes a physical description of the animal as well as an assessed monetary value.

Liens are a claim, encumbrance, or charge on property for payment of some debt, obligation, or duty. Lien dockets list the nature and amount of the lien and the services or materials taken from the debtors to pay their debts; or to discharge their obligation or duty

Records were destroyed by fire in 1885; records created after that date suffered extreme damage in a flood in 1977.

Scope and Content

Buchanan County (Va.) Miscellaneous Records, 1885-1946, consist of County and Circuit Court Appraisements of Estrays; County Court Judgment Lien Docket, Volume 1 and Volume 2; Mechanics' Liens; Register of Persons Practicing Optometry; Miscellaneous Contracts (including one adoption, 1946, which is restricted for 75 years); Contracts for Personal Property; and Federal Crop Morgage Book.
