Acquisition Information

The original bonds were removed from the courthouse during the Civil War and were deposited in historical societies in Massachusetts and Vermont. The first six bonds were given to the State Library by the Massachusetts Historical Society in 1905 under the accession numbers 19926-19931; the rest were bound together with some acts of the General Assembly by the Vermont Historical Society and were returned to Charles City County in 1975. The two lots have been combined in the photostats. The photostat volume came to the Library of Virginia under the accession number 28725.

Historical Information

Charles City County was named for Charles I of England and was one of the eight shires established in 1634.

Records have been destroyed at various times. The most damage occurred during the Civil War when the records were strewn through the woods in a rainstorm. A few pre-Civil War volumes such as deed books, will books, minute books, and order books exist.

Scope and Content

Charles City County (Va.) Bonds, 1762-1769, are photostatic copies of a variety of different kinds of bonds including ordinary bonds, executor bonds, guardian bonds, and officials bonds.
