Historical Information

Halifax County was named for George Montagu Dunk, second earl of Halifax, who was president of the Board of Trade from 1748 to 1761. It was formed from Lunenburg County in 1752.

Scope and Content

Halifax County (Va.) Sheriff's Fee and Account Book, 1846-1847, is a manuscript volume recording various lists of fees and fines that were the responsibility of the county's sheriff to collect. Examples include fees due the commissioner of revenue, clerks of court of Halifax and other counties, militia muster fines, and so forth. The name of the person and the amount owed is recorded in each list.

At least half of the volume has been used as a scrapbook during 1861-1866 circa with articles pasted over the documents. The articles mostly concern religious topics or poetry along with some published lists of Civil War dead. The scrapbook may have been assembled by a Miss Kate H. Easley whose name is written in pencil on one of the pages. The 1860 census shows a Cate H. Easley, aged 9, living in Halifax County with her father James S. Easley, a merchant.
