Scope and Content

Portsmouth (Va.) Virginia Teacher's Daily Registers, 1892-1954, contain daily attendance records and statistical information for White School No. 1 and No. 4, 1892-1894; White School No. 1-No. 5 and No. 7, 1905-1907; Brighton Negro School, 1926-1941; and Truxton Negro School, 1933-1954. The attendance records include name of teacher, names of pupils, age of pupils, and total days present for each pupil. Also included are monthly statistics: number of boys and girls on the roll, average daily attendance for boys and girls, average percent of boys and girls attending, average days present for boys and girls, average age of boy and girl pupils, number of boys and girls entered and dropped, and the number of boys and girls over 21 years of age. Also included is a summary of the number of visits to the schools by the County Superintendent, District Trustees, and others. In the back of the registers, names and addresses of parent or guardian for each student is listed. The parent information in the registers for the Truxton Negro School also lists the parents' occupation.

The registers also contain yearly summaries of statistics for the schools, a list of text books used, and information about the school buildings indicating if they were owned by the school district or not, number of rooms, amount of land the schools were situated on, and how the schools were heated and ventilated. The registers for the Brighton and Truxton Negro schools contain information on the furniture and equipment in the schools, the state of the schools' libraries (number of books owned, amount spent for the year, and number of books read by students), and information on the teachers (age, race, gender, education, and salary).
